Canadian Water Supplier Proactive When it Comes to Security
The Niagara region is located in southern Ontario between two of North America's Great Lakes (Ontario and Erie). Its rich soils and climate contribute to its position as one of Canada's best farming areas. The region is known for its wine industry. "The events of 9/11 made us all aware of the need to take precautions. We are all concerned about our security levels. We have forty remote water sites to manage. Not having visual information made the job difficult. Getting the needed data back quickly from our remote locations was a major problem. By installing the Longwatch system we now receive video from our sites", commented Mark Presti, SCADA Engineer.
Management Tool for Safety and Security
"The ability to generate event clips and have an archive of activity from each site will make our jobs easier and make things
safer for our staff. If one of our people has a problem at a site we want to know immediately. We centrally dispatch over 70
staff members and need as much information as possible to ensure their safety. We don't have any major issues with vandalism,
but we pride ourselves on being proactive. With the installation of Longwatch we addressed both our security concern and any
future vandalism problems", says Presti.
Water Supply operators have recognized that event based video is the best way to verify alarms and provide security at remotes sites like, well fields, pumping stations, and storage tanks. "We now have a 24/7 view of a remote elevated storage tank that we were concerned about. We're in the process of extending the system to a reservoir", described Presti.

Cost Effective Solution
The Longwatch Surveillance System is the most cost effective solution for transmitting video from remote locations. Operating
over existing SCADA communication networks, it eliminates the need to install costly new communications lines. Full motion
video can be delivered over radio, telephone, or satellite networks. "We have many remote locations in our system. We are not
in a position to install new communication links to these sites. With Longwatch we were able to use our Dycor 900 MHz radios
without any problem," says Presti.
Easy to Install and Operate
"The installation of the system went smoothly. After working with it awhile, we decided to add additional sites sooner than
we expected. We currently use the Intellution Fix32 for our SCADA system and will be upgrading to iFix 4.0. Integrating
Longwatch into our SCADA system will only enhance its performance", explained Presti. The Longwatch Surveillance System
allows operators to manage both SCADA system alarms and security alarms using the same system.
